The Aboitiz Power Corp. is seriously considering the use of seawater as a requirement for its proposed coal-fired power plant in Davao. The company is studying all means to ensure the plant will not create any inconvenience to the people. Instead of using fresh water, the proposed coal-fired power plant will be utilizing desalinated water.

The proposed facility will take seawater and discharge it at high pressure. The desalinated water will complement the water requirement to run the power plant without seriously affecting the fresh water sources in the area. Read the rest of this entry »

Aboitiz Power Corp. is pushing for the establishment of a coal-fired power plant in Davao City as it sees a coal plant as the best source of electricity when it comes to reliability, affordability and safety.

Aboitiz has decided look for new energy source after realizing that hydropower plants is vulnerable to weather conditions. Getting a construction permit in Davao City is the easiest in the Philippines. This is according to the latest report released by International Finance Corporation and World Bank last December 8, 2010.

The report entitled “Doing Business in the Philippines 2011″ by Subnational. Doing Business covers 25 major cities in the Philippines. The report includes 11 indicator sets and 183 economies.

The city council of Davao has approved the application of Southernpoint Properties for the reclassification of a 10-hectare lot in Lanang into a commercial zone. The said property is originally intended for parks and recreation.

Southernpoint Properties, a SM Prime holdings subsidiary passed all the necessary requirements for the reclassification. The company is going to construct and operate a commercial building inside the property. The 10-hectare land was bought by SM Prime Holdings from Dakudao and Sons and was formerly part of the 40-hectare Lanang Golf and Country Club.

Davao-based software companies are gearing up for the first-ever software exhibition in Davao City. The event is known as Software Exhibition in Davao City 2010 or “SEx IN D’ CITY 2010″ with the theme “Generating Passion for Software Innovation”.

The exhibit will feature the products and services offered by local software developers such as web-based applications, web design and development, billing system, inventory management solutions and many more. The said two-day event will be held at SM City Davao activity center and will run from December 5 to 6, 2010. It is expected to gather different exhibitors and participants in the field of software and IT-enabled services.

The Asian Institute of Management (AIM) has recently named Davao City for being the best in quality of life among metropolitan cities in the Philippines

Davao City also bagged others citations which include:

1. Special Award on the Compliance to Government Plans and Programs
2. Special Award in Documentation, for providing the AIM with a very good documentation of Davao City’s system
3. An Entrepreneur’s Award, for being the most small and medium enterprises- friendly

In 2001, 2005 and 2008, Davao also named as the Most Competitive Metro City in the Philippines by the Asian Institute of Management.

ICT Davao, an organization of all information and communication technology groups hosted by Davao City was one of the delegates who participated in the first Indo ASEAN IT business summit along with Vichael Roaring, Commercial Attache and Embassy of The Republic of the Philippines in New Delhi. The said summit came to create a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ICT organization of Davao City and Gujarat IT-ITES, an IT organization based in India.

The MOU was signed by the ICT Davao Vice-President Samuel Matunog and the President of Gujarat Electronics and Software Industries Association (GESIA), Nirav Shah. GESIA is composed of 240+ member companies around the world.

The two bodies agreed to establish interaction, promote business missions, organize and participate on workshops and seminars, promote advisory services on industry prospects and status and institute relationships for exchange of information.

The MOU proves that the city of Davao is an asset for business process outsourcing (BPO) of the country. Fruitful and progressive opportunities are expected to come along between the ICT Davao and the Gujarat partnership. In the same development, two big BPO firms are planning to set up business in the city as part of their expansion. One of which could possibly hire more than 500 call center agents.

For 2010, Davao is the first in the top 10 next wave cities of the Philippines. The business process outsourcing industry is one of the most promising sectors and generates thousands of jobs in the city. The partnership between India and Philippines is a good start for more business opportunities to set in Davao City.
