Davao City has once again received recognition for its effective implementation of anti-smoking ordinance. Just recently, the Department of Health gives the Red Orchid Award to Davao City in a ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in Manila. The award is given in celebration of the World No Tobacco Day.

This is the second time that the city of Davao received the award. Included in the award are certificate, trophy and Php 100,000 worth of nicotine replacement therapy patches or medicines to help smokers quit from smoking.

Among the criteria for the said award are strong implementation of tobacco control policies, delivery of smoking cessation services and the provision of information and education to people on the dangers smoking.

The Red Orchid award is a clear indication of the successful anti-smoking drive of the city. It is notable that Davao also received the Global Smoke Free Partnership (GSFP) Award in 2008 by South East Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA).

Aside from regular cigarettes, Davao is also eyeing to amend its local smoking ordinance that will eventually lead to the prohibition of water pipes, shisha and electronic cigarettes in public places.
