Davao City recently received the Red Orchid Award from the Department of Health making Davao in its Hall of Fame. The award is given by the Department of Health to the Best Smoke-Free City in the Philippines.
This is the third time that the city of Davao received such award for its successful implementation of the anti-smoking ordinance. The Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance was implemented in November 2002 which aims to regulate smoking in all public establishments in Davao. The ordinance was considered as the first extensive anti-smoking ordinance in the Philippines. This step has inspired other cities to follow such campaign.
The city government of Davao is eyeing for a 100 percent tobacco-free with the total compliance of the anti-smoking ordinance in all establishments in the city.
Aside from Davao, two other Philippines cities were also given the same recognition namely Maasin City and Legaspi City for their anti-smoking campaign.
