Final Hearing on Proposed Coal Power Plant Set on May 6

The city council of Davao is scheduled to convene this coming May 6 for the final hearing of the proposed coal-fired power plant by Aboitiz in Davao. The proposal sparked debate among the people of Davao since it came out. Many people believe especially environmentalists that the project will be harmful to the health and to the environment. Aboitiz company on the other hand, assures the people of Davao that the proposed power plant project will be utilizing new technologies to minimize the harmful effects of the project to the environment. The public hearing on Friday, May 6 will be the third and probably the last.

The proposed power plant project is expected to worth Php 25 billion making it the biggest single investment in Davao once the project is approved. The power plant will be a situated on a 52-hectare property at Barangay Binugao and Inawayan in Toril, south of Davao City.

Later April, the barangay councils of Binugao in Toril and Inawayan in Sta. Cruz, where the plant will be located gave a go signal for the proposal. Both councils believe in the economic benefits once the project is established.

The two public hearings were participated by several stakeholders from various organizations and host residents. The pubic hearing is a great opportunity for the people to raise their concerns and queries regarding the proposal.

Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte also expressed his support for the proposal as this will greatly benefit the city. Duterte further believes that there is no reason to hinder the approval as long as the power plant project will not bring negative effects to the environment.
