International Cocoa Convention to be Held in Davao

The first international convention that is set to gather stakeholders in the cocoa industry will be held in Davao City. The event dubbed as “Kakao Konek” is expected to attract around 300 to 400 delegates this coming November 21 to 23 at the Apo View Hotel and Abreeza Mall Davao.

The convention will feature five major activities namely the cacao conference, cacao farm tours, Kacao Kulinarya, buyers-sellers night and the Sikwatehan sa Barrio or networking night. There will also be business matching opportunity activity during the two-day convention.

The convention will showcase the opportunities and challenges facing the cacao industry of Davao Region and the rest of Mindanao.

Feedback from international buyers reveals that flavors of cocoa beans from Davao are of excellent quality. In fact, the Davao White Chocolate Nibble Bar of Askinosie Chocolate has been named by The Times of London as one of the 10 Best Chocolate Bars in the world and also received Silver sofi™ Winner 2011 – Outstanding Chocolate award.

Mars, one of the biggest chocolate makers in the world directly tapped Davao farmers to supply its cacao requirement.

The company is known for many famous brands namely M&M’s, Snickers, and the Mars bar including 3 Musketeers, Dove, Milky Way, Skittles, Twix, and many more.

Chocolate tablet or tablea production is one of the main sources of livelihood in Davao Region. Mati and San Isidro in Davao Oriental for instance have thousand of hectares of cacao farm.

80% of country’s cacao export came from Davao making it country’s top producer and exporter of cacao.

The demand for cacao in the world market is growing and so is the international buyers’ interest for Davao cacao. This makes cacao farming the next big thing” in the country’s agriculture export industry.

    Wow naman! Hope we can meet the demand. I heard more than a million cacao seedlings had already been distrubuted to farmers in Davao region as of this year.
