What makes an environment-friendly hotel? There are many ways to practice in order to be considered an environment-friendly hotel. The use of Compact Fluorescent Lamps and other environmentally-friendly practices within the establishments are just some of the practices to be called environment-friendly.

One of the hotels in Davao City is now practicing a green tourism activity. The Marco Polo Hotel, a popular hotel in Davao has acquired some of the characteristics that make this hotel an environment-friendly. All the lights in the hotel are CFL or Compact Fluorescent Lamps. The warm showers come from a pump that gathers heat from other sources. The hotel also segregates its waste products from non-biodegradable to biodegradable materials. The practices done by Marco Polo hotel lead them to received the Asean Green Hotel recognition Award. The Marco Polo Hotel Davao sets a good example for the rest of the hotels and other tourism establishments in Davao City for their green initiative.

In the same development, the United Nation has many programs and campaigns like the green passport and the sustainable coastal tourism campaign in order to promote sustainable development. The Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) and the Tourism Sustainability Council (TSC) were launched to develop awareness for a global sustainable tourism industry.

Last March, a forum on Green Tourism was held in Davao in order to introduce energy-saving practices and guidelines. The ideas about Green Tourism are expected to be adopted by the different sectors in the local tourism industry.

Green Tourism is very important for a sustainable development and minimizing the negative effects of climate change. This campaign is a great strategy to encourage tourism businesses to voluntarily adopt the basic green guidelines so they can become more sustainable.

Aside from Marco Polo Hotel, there are already some supermarkets, resorts and tourism establishments that already started practicing green tourism.
